Dog Food Facts-pt 1-Corn Gluten Meal

If you are feeding your pets a basic product (i.e Pedigree, Beneful, or Purina), there is an ingredient called Corn Gluten Meal-"it is a by-product of corn through the wet milling process. Corn gluten is added to absorb the toxins that may be in the rendered parts when added to the cooking process. Corn is the #3 cause of allergies in dogs. Dogs do not digest corn well and would not eat corn in the wild. Corn gluten is a cheap source of protein and is used by many companies as a filler."
This filler is also used as a herbicide to kill crab grass and other weeds in peoples gardens.
Is this filler potentially dangerous to your pet? I'm not sure, but I do know that it causes pets to have allergies, loose stools, gas and obesity.  I learned that there is no good reason to use Corn Gluten Meal and other fillers except to make your dog food less expensive.
So the next time you picking up your pooches Dog Chow, look at the ingredient list. If you see Corn, Corn Meal, Corn Gluten Meal you might want to think about putting that bag back and moving on to something else.

Here are some of my favorites:
*Wellness
*Avo-Derm
*Solid Gold
*Merrick

Each of these foods are made with human grade ingredients an NO fillers.

cookies and pooches

Pawsitiviely Gourmet

So I was at work the other day and someone made a comment on my bakery dog cookies. they said they thought it was funny that people give their dogs treats that look like cupcakes or some kind of holiday design...its not like the dog knows what it is!! But I think different!!! So what if the dog doesn't know its a dog biscuit shaped like a jack-o-lantern. The point is that you know what it is, and you're dog will feel special because you're giving it something that will make you happy..So celebrate the holiday seasons coming up..if its halloween, thanksgiving or christmas..go out there and get your pooch a special treat!

Wiener Races!

This is one of the most fun events of the Fall!  This one was held at Qualcomm Stadium in San Diego, but my favorite is the one held at the Old World Village in Huntington Beach, California. The races start in August and go all the way to October to celebrate Octoberfest!
Don't worry this is nothing like the Greyhound races, there is no betting and dogs get praised if they win or lose! The tracks are also fairly short. Its just a fun event for Dachshund lovers to get together and have a good time. Also, part of the money raised goes to an animal charity group! Just make sure your dog is healthy before entering in on the race! If you're dog isn't up to racing thats ok too! Just come on by with your pooch and get a beer and a bratwurst!
Me and Maggie watching the races!

The races are also a great place to show off Doggy fashion!

dog tags!

vintage dog tag

I found these on etsy today! They're aluminum dog tags that I just love. They're made by a dog loving girl from Missouri. She has many different styles, but these two are my favorite! I'll definitely be buying these for Maggie and Jack as soon as I can..

Balboa Dog Park

View of the museums

Is one of the prettiest places in San Diego to take your pooch! It has a wide open space with lots of grass and trees and a spectacular view of the Museum of Man. You can even take your pooch for a walk through Balboa Park..its pretty much all dog friendly, just not inside the museums!

Leather Collars

who doesn't love skull and crossbones?!
So, one of the things I feel is the hardest to find is a collar that not only fits your pets personality, but yours as well!! I think Etsy is probably the best place to look for amazing leather collars! Maybe one day I will get into making my own, but for now here are a few of my favorites...
